The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
