In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
