Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the ability to question certain decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
